Drug companies do not MARKET to doctors. They rather use doctors as an extension of their sales force. Drug companies market to the end-user overwhelmingly nowadays. The amount of money they spend on silly dinners is insignificant to the amount spent on direct advertising and more importantly, to lobbyists inside the Washington beltway. If you think a $100 dinner lavished on 10,000 doctors is a significant cost, try advertising in top magazines and online to reach a market of 300,000,000 pill swallowers.
