If I don't grow it myself, I buy as much of my food as possible directly from the farmer. If I can't do that, I try to make sure it is locally sourced -- OK not the bananas -- and organically grown, and I buy as little processed food as possible.

It is merely being prudent to eat lower on the food and food processing chains IMO.

I'm listening to a CBC radio interview right now with an expert on Chinese food production. The most chilling statistic -- the rate of environmentally-related cancers in China is rising 20% per year in the cities and 30% per year in the country.

It reinforces the basic premise -- avoid the industrial food production process as much as possible.
