"Why does it need to be resolved? I mean I understand why scientists study it, but for the rest of us, what does it matter? What's so tough with just living in the here and now?"

We actually never have lived anywhere but in the here and now and never will. The construct of time is a dimension of the limited that we use to organize our understanding of existence. However, there are two perspectives on life time. When life is over, the mysterious underly entity, either vanishes into nothingness (see my description of nothing) or it continues for eternity. Past and future time is an illusion, which we need to organize the separate parts of life's existence so that we have a foundation of understanding in the here and now to live by.

If you take the perspective of no eternity, it changes your view of life from continuation to limited. If you take the perspective of life as eternal, then you can address the limited practicalities with a view of life having purpose that extends beyond the self interests of material matters. You have the universal interest of human principle that is given as part of the human condition but extends beyond the interests of the material. Since the nobility of human beings seems to be recognizable and is most evident when human beings extend their individual purpose beyond material self interest then there is self evidence that seems universally confirmed about purpose that extends beyond the limitations of one's material life.
