I knew that all of the above had slaves, except for W. Va. -- didn't it secede from VA because it didn't want slaves?

I think it was more that W VA opposed secession from the Union. I think it had some slaves but many of the men who would have opposed secession from VA were already with the Confederate army and didn't vote.

You never counted delaware as a northern state?? why didn't Grant free his slaves before the war like Lee did ?
