Heh. I thought from the first couple paragraphs you were suggesting a way to catch illegals. Actually, though, I think the author is off base in thinking Americans are too dumb to see the metaphorical fence. While some pols on the left surely do still think in terms of central planning and control, forced equality of outcomes instead of opportunities, and other misguided populist and socialistic ideals, we have plenty of pols and plenty of ordinary people who do understand markets and incentives and the proper role of government, even if they haven't read Smith or Hayek, and who are tearing down the old welfare state fences and will prevent the building of any new ones. And if you want evidence of that, you need look no further than the welfare reforms passed in the 1990s (under Clinton), designed to increase incentives for work and reduce dependence (by people capable of work) on government handouts. Now, perhaps you could tell me what new fences (metaphorical ones, not the one at the border) our new congress is building. From what I've heard, this new congress isn't doing much of anything.
