To the extent that (if elected) he follows through on I will restore fiscal discipline and cut wasteful Washington spending. I will cut taxes and reform the tax code. I will give Americans more control over and access to healthcare with affordable and portable free-market solutions. and to a lesser extent I will impose accountability on Washington. I will reform the legal system and appoint strict constructionist judges. and perhaps I will provide access to a quality education to every child in America by giving real school choice to parents. He would be taking a step in the right direction as to the point I'm addressing. How big of step is an open question. I'm not sure that he would want to do more than change at the margin (I can't see for example him trying to cut out huge chunks of the federal budget, even if he can reign in future spending increases). Even if he does want to, he'd have to work within a system that would make it very difficult. Another point is that his statements are mostly pretty general and could have different meanings. Some possible meanings for "I will lead America towards energy independence. " could actually be a step backwards in terms of what I'm talking about.
