Qualcomm and TeleCommunication Systems bring A-GPS to BREW Locate Signature

May 15, 2007 - GPS World

Wireless chip maker Qualcomm Inc. and wireless data communications provider TeleCommunication Systems Inc. (TCS) said today they are teaming up to bring assisted-GPS to Qualcomm's location-based services (LBS) product BREW Locate Signature.

BREW Locate Signature already includes a catalog of location-based applications from global publishers and developers, as well as a hosted content delivery service for these applications. Under the agreement between Qualcomm and TCS, Qualcomm can now also offer WCDMA wireless operators a location service that utilizes TCS' hosted Xypoint Secure User Plane for Location Server (SUPL) for A-GPS devices.

This will enable operators to quickly deploy location-based services such as navigation, traffic, social networking and buddy-finder service applications, as they can leverage the accuracy and signal fixing advantages of A-GPS technology, according to the two companies.

"By working with TCS ... Qualcomm believes it can accelerate adoption of wireless location-based services, a technology with tremendous opportunity for mobile content," Mitch Oliver, Qualcomm Internet Services vice president of solutions and marketing, said in a statement.

This will enable operators to quickly deploy... in the next year? I'm becoming a little impatient, but I'm not holding my breath for Broadcom either.
