Dale > Mbeki will pay the price for not taking care of Mugabe much, much earlier.

On the contrary, Mugabe's destruction of Zimbabwe plays directly into Mbeki's fantasy of a single pan-African "nation" with its headquarters in South Africa. And, indeed, he's not the first to have had this dream -- the first was Cecil Rhodes and the second was General Smuts -- both of whom saw all of Africa as one nation under the British Crown.

Indeed, Mbeki must have the "blessing" of the US and the UK in his NEPAD and AU machinations. In fact, he is never publicly criticized for his so-called "quiet diplomacy" (= no diplomacy) in respect of Zim. The West must surely believe that in a single African nation or federation, which functions tacitly as a South African colony, they will be able to do as they please with Africa's resources, especially oil.

But what is important to realize is that Mbeki has no particular interest in or for the people of South Africa -- the recent, protracted strike of seething, angry government workers serves to demonstrate that. Likewise, the enormous support for Zuma (which we have spoken about before) and the failure of Mbeki to name any suitable successor for the presidency. Mbeki's concern is primarily with his pan-African fantasy -- or should I say, "delusion of grandeur" -- and for this, South Africa, not Mbeki as you suggest, has to pay the price.
