Yellen worries that "a sudden reversal in risk perceptions," as happened after the Asian financial crisis of 1997-98, could again provoke "sharp asset price declines and a frightening and sudden erosion of market liquidity." Should central banks tighten monetary policy as a protective measure, pricking the bubbles? Yellen, like her Fed colleagues thinks not, they should "mainly rely on supervisory tools and prudential regulation" but stand ready to "cushion" the economy if and when shocks occur.
