re: You have no way of knowing that.

Sure I do. There are a lot worse assholes than Iraq out there that we would never think of invading. But the ME has the lifeblood of our economy and their hand on the spigot.

That wasn't the only difference.

Also oil supplies would still be a concern even if our consumption was low enough that we currently didn't import any oil.

The principle is the same. Force is provided to protect the peace and access to resources, and to prevent others from removing such access.

How truly strange you are (but libertarian NOT)! Local police forces are the same as our army invading and occupying another country?

They are not the same in general, but their the same in terms of what we are talking about. The invasion was in response to a violation of a ceasefire that was a result of another invasion. The occupation, with the US acting as the government of Iraq was ended as soon as possible, replaced with a democratically elected government, that if not exactly a beacon of freedom, allows for more freedom then is typical in the region, and far more then the previous government.

A basic principle of libertarianism is to reduce the initiation of force (sometimes expressed as "force or fraud"), Saddam imposed a lot of force on people within his country, and occasionally on other countries. Stopping that is hardly required by the libertarian viewpoint, but its certainly not against that idea.
