The top blogs have quite a bit of readership, and then their stories get spread by others, from forums like SI, to "mainstream media", to the discussions of political parties.

Individually none of them are as influential as the New York Times, or one of the top news channels (networks, CNN, Fox), collectively they aren't as influential as the "mainstream media", but they are far from obscure.
