Britons jailed over al Qaeda plot to bomb NYSE By Michael Holden
Fri Jun 15, 8:25 AM ET

LONDON (Reuters) - Seven Britons linked to a plot to blow up U.S. financial institutions, including the New York Stock Exchange, and stage a series of attacks in Britain were jailed for a total of 136 years by a London court on Friday.

Prosecutors said the men were part of a group headed by senior al Qaeda operative Dhiren Barot and described as "one of the most dangerous and ambitious terrorist cells ever to operate in this country."

Barot is currently serving a life jail term after admitting last year he had planned bomb attacks in Britain and the United States.

Six of the men, Mohammed Naveed Bhatti, Junade Feroze, Zia Ul Haq, Abdul Aziz Jalil, Nadeem Tarmohamed and Omar Abdur Rehman pleaded guilty to conspiring with Barot to cause explosions between 2001 and 2004.

The seventh, Qaisar Shaffi, was found guilty on Wednesday.

Barot, a Muslim convert, was considered by some U.S. officials to be either al Qaeda's cell leader in Europe or at least the head of bin Laden's organization in Britain.

In early 2001, he had carried out surveillance on the NYSE, Citigroup, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and Prudential in New York, Washington, and Newark, New Jersey.

After the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, he turned his attention to Britain and had plotted coordinated attacks using a radioactive "dirty bomb," limousines filled with gas cylinders and the blowing up of an underground train beneath the River Thames.

Had their plans come to fruition, Barot's trial judge said they would have caused "carnage and butchery ... on a colossal and unprecedented scale."

His seven accomplices had helped put the plans together and scope out targets.

Peter Clarke, head of London's Counter Terrorism Command, said the men were vital to the plots.

"They were the planning team and were needed by Barot to contribute expertise in areas that he was lacking," he said.

"They were the trusted few who researched, carried out reconnaissance and supported Barot."

At Woolwich Crown Court in south London, Feroze was jailed for 22 years; Bhatti and Tarmohamed to 20 years; Ul Haq to 18 years; Jalil to 26 years; Rehman and Shaffi to 15 years.

Last month, the High Court cut Barot's jail term from 40 to 30 years after it was ruled the initial sentence was too harsh.

Al Qaeda claims execution of 14 Iraqi soldiers and police held hostage

This time no casualties were reported. The Askariya dome itself was destroyed Feb. 2006 in a bombing blamed on al Qaeda-linked Sunni insurgents, which sparked Iraq’s worst wave of sectarian violence. Since then, the mosque has been closed and heavily guarded.

Another bridge was also blown up on the main Kirkuk-Tikrit highway Tuesday night, the 5th highways span destroyed in Iraq in recent weeks. Eastern Kurdistan was thus severed from Baghdad. DEBKAfile’s military sources report al Qaeda is systematically disrupting mainline transport in a bid to pre-empt any possibility of an orderly US military withdrawal from Iraq.

US State Department’s No. 2, John Negroponte visited Baghdad Tuesday and discussed with Iraqi prime minister Nouri al-Maliki ways of speeding up reforms. He pressed in particular for the passage of the oil law and a bill reinstating Baath politicians in government and the military. As they spoke, at least 45 people were killed or found dead across Iraq.

Iran warns US over detainees Marked as: Mature, Repost (Check)
Iran warns US over detainees

TEHRAN

13-Jun-07

IRAN yesterday warned that the United States would be made to "regret" its detention of five Iranian officials in Iraq but said it was still ready to consider continuing talks with its arch foe.

"We will make the Americans regret their ugly and illegal action against the consulate of Iran in Arbil in Iraq and kidnapping five of our diplomats," Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said, according to state television.

Mottaki did not elaborate on how the United States would be made to regret its move.

He added that Iran in the next two days would send a letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon protesting "the lack of attention and clear, indefensible discrimination of the Security Council" on the issue.

The United States in January arrested five Iranian officials working for an Iranian office in the northern Iraqi city of Arbil, accusing the men of belonging to the elite special operations force of the Revolutionary Guards.

US military officials have also said two other Iranians have been detained in Iraq but it is unclear when and where they were arrested.

Iran insists that the men are diplomats working for a "consulate" and the affair has further soured the atmosphere between the two foes even after their highest-level public contacts in 27 years two weeks ago.

Those talks in Baghdad between Iranian ambassador to Iraq Hassan Kazemi Qomi and his US counterpart Ryan Crocker on Iraq's security appeared to achieve no major breakthrough and no date was set for a further encounter.

However Iranian officials yesterday appeared to express readiness to continue the talks, as Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Barham Saleh visited Tehran.

"If the Americans decide to change their policies on Iraq we will examine positively a request from the Iraqi government to continue the discussions with the US," Mottaki said.

"It is agreed that Iran will examine positively a request from the Iraqi government to continue discussions with the United States," added Kazemi Qomi, in Tehran for Saleh's visit.

The date "will depend on the invitation of Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki. This should not come too late", he added.

Saleh meanwhile met with the detained officials' families, who have repeatedly protested over the lack of access to the prisoners for themselves or consular officials.

The official Irna agency quoted Saleh as expressing hope that the talks would go ahead and saying that the agenda would be up to Washington and Tehran. Kazemi Qomi added that if the talks with the US continued, they would "also be about the freeing of five Iranian diplomats".The talks only aimed at restoring security to Iraq and did not veer into other contentious issues such as Iran's nuclear programme and the wider situation in the Middle East

Iran moves to execute porn stars
• People involved in adult films are "corrupter of the world," Iran's parliament says
• Producers, directors, cameramen and actors could face the death penalty
• Distributors and producers of pornographic Web sites could also face death
• The vote follows the leaking of a sex tape allegedly involving an Iranian actress
Adjust font size:
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Iran's parliament on Wednesday voted in favor of a bill that could lead to the death penalty for persons convicted of working in the production of pornographic movies.

With a 148-5 vote in favor and four abstentions, lawmakers present at the Wednesday session of the 290-seat parliament approved that "producers of pornographic works and main elements in their production are considered corrupter of the world and could be sentenced to punishment as corrupter of the world."

The term, "corrupter of the world" is taken from the Quran, the Muslims' holy book, and ranks among the highest on the scale of an individual's criminal offenses. Under Iran's Islamic Penal Code, it carries a death penalty.

The "main elements" referred to in the draft include producers, directors, cameramen and actors involved in making a pornographic video.

The bill also envisages convictions ranging from one year imprisonment to a death sentence for the main distributors of the movies and also producers of Web sites in which the pornographic works appear.

Besides videos, the bill covers all electronic visual material, such as DVDs and CDs. Other material, such as porn magazines and books, are already banned under Iranian law.

To become law, the bill requires an approval by the Guardian Council, a constitutional watchdog in Iran.

It is widely believed that the drafting of the bill came about as a reaction to a scandal last year, when a private videotape, apparently belonging to Iranian actress Zahra Amir Ebrahimi and allegedly showing her having intercourse with a man, became available across Iran.

The videotape was leaked to the Internet and released on a black market DVD, becoming a full-blown Iranian sex tape scandal. Ebrahimi later came under an official investigation, which is still ongoing. She faces fines, whip lashing or worse for her violation of Iran's morality laws.

The unnamed man on the tape, who is suspected of releasing it, reportedly fled to Armenia but was subsequently returned to Iran and charged with breach of public morality laws. He remains in jail.

In an exclusive interview with the British newspaper The Guardian early this year, Ebrahimi denied she was the woman in the film and dismissed it as a fake, made by a vengeful former fiance bent on destroying her career.

In recent years, private videotapes have increasingly been leaked to the public in Iran, riling the government and many in this conservative Islamic country, where open talk of sex is banned and considered taboo.

However, pornographic material is easily accessible through foreign satellite television channels in Iran. Bootleg videotapes and CDs are also available on the black market on many street corners.

iranian women beaten by police for not wearing the veil Marked as: Mature
this happened recently in iran, a women was beaten by the police for not wearing her veil. Here is the website where there are 2 video's of the incident.

kamangir.net

here is the transcript of the incident:

[What is] this country? [A woman to the Police] You filthy people! [A man] She is beaten up by the Police. [Woman to people] You have no honor [that let the Police beat women like this]! [A woman takes off her veil shouting] We want freedom! [A man] Take pictures! [The woman continues] We want freedom! We do not want the veil! [A woman] Take pictures! [Another woman] Maryam! [a girl’s name] Capture it on tape! [The injured woman to the Police] You are not human!

here are people who describe the events:

According to a respectable women’s rights group, today, Sunday, both in the morning and later in the evening, following the summer veil program, a group of Police officers got involved in physical struggle with the girls they questioned for their “immodesty”. According to eye wittinesses, the officers were trying to arrest the girls, but because of their restraint, a few men on the scene got involved in the incident.

A shopkeeper in 7-Tir square in Tehran mentioned later “The officers questioned three girls, aged 25- 30, for their veils. The questioning was so harsh that they reacted. A female officer started pulling a girl’s hand to get her in the police patrol, but she refused. Then, a male officer attacked the girl. That was when others got involved. The girls were taken away by passing cars safe from the police. They got into civilian cars while they had no covering and their cloths were torn away,

A taxi driver also said “In the morning, while the police was brutally questioning a girl, her cries for help enraged other people”. He also said that when the second incident happened, a mother and daughter were hit by the Police. While showing their injured faces to the people, they took off their veils. The two ladies have reportedly captured the incident on tape. The picture above shows one of the ladies.

Taking off their veils when the Police questions them for improper veils is becoming a trend in Iran. A similar incident, ten days ago, was caught on tape and posted on Youtube.
