My partner is a disabled marine. He was injured on the flight deck of his carrier and discharged with 10% disability. Then they shuttled him into the VA where they tried to 'fix' his shattered hand by screwing a a temp pin. When he went in to get the pin removed a different doctor had two massive navy orderlies hold him down in the chair while the 'doctor' tried to pull out the pin with a set of pliers....like a nail. Problem was, no anesthetic and the pin was actually a screw. When my partner woke up his wrist was completely shattered. The doc was able to pull out the pin after all.

Since then he has had 8 'operations' to correct the mistake. He now has deteriorating bone in both hips from where they tried to replace his wrist bones with pieces carved out of his hips. He is so immune to pain pills it's not even funny. After 10 years of torture they finally gave up and sent him to a world renowned private specialist. He just shook his head and said, ""If you'd come to me first you'd be completely normal today. After what you've been through, your body can't cope with the 24/7 pain and it is shutting down and killing itself." My partner is 42 years old.
