I think what makes this such an enthralling story is that it is a fable come to life like the ugly duckling, or Rocky -- the underdog beating his enemies. Paul was bullied as a kid; apparently making him shy and unsure of himself. Yet, all the while the seed of redemption from all that torment was with him all the time.

It also reminds me of a stanza from one of my favorite poems: Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard by Thomas Gray. In it, Gray wanders through a graveyard next to a church imagining what kind of lives these obscure people might have led. He fancies that many of them may have been noble statesmen, illustrious scientists, heroes or even villains; if any of them but had the chance at fame.

Full many a gem of purest ray serene
The dark unfathom'd caves of ocean bear:
Full many a flower is born to blush unseen,
And waste its sweetness on the desert air.


Every so often, the buried gems surface to stun the world.
