There was also that nasty case of contaminated L-tryptophan dietary supplement from one Japanese company in the late 1980s. It sickened thousands of people with eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome: en.wikipedia.org

All of these instances generated tons of press coverage and regulatory attention, just like we are seeing with the tainted Chinese products today.
