I know a German lady whose 5 daughters married servicemen stationed in Germany. She retired and once a year she’d make a tour visiting one after the other across the USA.

I know a few German people whose houses, were bought, rented to U.S. service men and the rent went to mortgage, the U.S. paid their houses!

I used to go to the Black Forest, -one of the most pleasant areas of Germany. With very good wine too.

As I drove around, during Summer I saw like hundreds of holiday makers. The family of the troops –Canadian and Americans- visiting Germany.

The officers, after winning the war didn’t want to go back home to the barracks. They were going to lose those nice castles they used as headquarters during WW II. So they concocted the Cold War and stayed on until the early 90s. Hey, I would not be called Elmat if I would not spice this up with some cynical remarks

You can hear George C. Scott as Gen. Patton -in the film saying- “Now we will not stop, we will go after the Russians” or something similar. The generals wanted their power and their cushy jobs protected. OSS became the CIA and the rest is history.

Today, they are in Saddam’s palace in the Green Zone in a country west of where Elmat seats right. Man Bush will have a hard time bringing those troops home!!!
