The people who think the US military will be in Iraq for years to come are deluding themselves.

Once the US starts pulling out of Iraq, likely in 2008, the mega-bases they are building will be all they have left there.

Once a clear victor emerges in the civil war, they will turn and get rid of the forces occupying those bases. If a strong leader takes over, it will be real easy to rally local support for the end of occupation by US forces. They could even go to the UN and the Arab League to force the issue.

If the US does not take sides in the civil war, what use will their bases be? The only way they can keep those bases there is if they pick a side in the civil war to support, and it wins, crushing the opposition. That's a long shot, as it would turn Iraq into a civil war fought by proxy.

We are witnessing government waste on a scale never before seen. Nearly everything the US has or will build in Iraq will be destroyed or taken away from them eventually. Why doesn't anyone care? Because Reagan proved deficits don't matter?

$2-Trillion to "Kick Ass". You wonder if it wouldn't have made more sense just to get some of the Neocons a supercomputer so they could play their games in a virtual world instead of the real world.
