The Reservists and National Guard are called up for emergencies. Their first goal is to protect the homeland. An overseas emergency is certainly something for which they can be used, but when a conflict lingers on for years, regular troops should have replaced the emergency forces by now. If you have trouble recruiting regular troops, then you have to raise the pay or the benefits. Something Bush and the GOP can't do because they have cut tax revenues for such things. Cutting taxes is popular, but it makes no sense if you are really in an expensive bunch of wars.

In one of our other wars, I see that The Taliban is kicking our butts all over Afghanistan. The entire idea of going over there was to kill or capture the terrorists. But, we are afraid to go into Pakistan and the Pakistanis prefer the terrorists to us. And using Afghanistan as a base to threaten terrorists in Pakistan is becoming more untenable every day. So, we are fighting the war we should be fighting on the cheap and paying big bucks to fight the war we should never have been fighting. Makes sense to me.
