The typical approach to fire protection in buildings is to coat beams with a material that delays the transfer of heat to the metal. The key is to remove the heat source before the protection fails.


The NTSB report noted that the crash of the planes effectively blew away the foam coating on the WTC beams, leaving them directly exposed to the heat of the fire.
