They are an offshoot of Ralph Nadar. They get Student Governments to donate a lot of money to them. And work for various Left-Wing Causes. You note they are pushing Global Warming at the moment.

Their staff positions are an excellent place for the hard left to perch. Provides a good income while they work their various causes.

When I was in college the local pirg affiliate got an automatic donation from our activities fees. If we didn't want to contribute we could go wait in a line and apply for a refund which would be mailed in 3-4 months. I waited in line.
