I mostly use Expedia as a search engine now, like Google. And after I find some hotels I'm interesting in (or airline) I almost always end up purchasing directly from the company in question, e.g. Delta or Best Western or United or Hertz. It's rare I don't get the same deal, and sometimes it's better. And when I checked into a hotel in Oakland last year, they told me they gave preference for non-smoking rooms to those who booked directly with them, and since the demand outstripped supply, they gave me and my wife a smoking room since we'd booked on Expedia.

So essentially, for many travelers, Expedia is becoming redundant.
