I heard a piece on the radio last week about a guy who's traveled the country taking dishwashing jobs. He said when he went to New Orleans (pre-Katrina), he was told the whites work in the front of the house, blacks in the back. Thus, no dishwashing job if you aren't black. He said he eventually got a job but it took him several weeks, rather than a day or two.

At the risk of admitting I listen occasionally to "People's Radio", here is the link:

Washing dishes was not a stepping stone for Pete Jordan, but a calling. For 12 years, he was an itinerant dish-washer. He was so committed to the profession that he set out to work as a dish-washer in all 50 states.

He takes readers to the heart of the kitchen – the dish pit – in "Dishwasher: One Man's Quest to Wash Dishes in All 50 States.

Jordan, aka "Dishwasher Pete," talks with Michele Norris about his dishwashing exploits around the country.
