Rudy Giuliani's former South Carolina presidential campaign chairman, state Treasurer Thomas Ravenel, was indicted yesterday on federal cocaine charges.

The millionaire former real estate developer is accused of buying less than 500 grams of the drug to share with other people in late 2005, U.S. Attorney Reggie Lloyd said.

Ravenel, 44, is charged with distribution of cocaine, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

State law enforcement authorities said they were aware of the allegations against Ravenel before he was elected state treasurer in November, but they didn't have enough information to pursue criminal charges.

A Giuliani spokesman said Ravenel was no longer involved in the campaign. "Our campaign has no information about the accusations pending against Mr. Ravenel. Mr. Ravenel has stepped down from his volunteer responsibilities with the campaign," Giuliani spokesman Mark Campbell said.

News of the indictment came as the former mayor was heading to Iowa today to tout his fiscal views as the most conservative of the presidential pack.

With his poll numbers there lagging, Giuliani is clearly looking to shore up his conservative credentials in the key electoral battleground. He will do it with a Des Moines speech on the economy and the U.S. budget - including plans to slash the federal payroll by 20% over 10 years and make permanent President Bush's tax cuts, aides said.

I'll vote Republican no matter what, but Rudy just isn't at the top of my list now.
