One problem with the AMT is it puts you in a situation where you have to calculate your taxes due two different ways, and pay whichever is HIGHER.

If they want to get rid of all sorts of deductions (as the AMT does for many people) they should just get rid of them, and then have simple taxes with low rates.

But AMT isn't simple (and the rates aren't that low), and even if you do better under AMT then you would under the regular tax schedule, you still don't benefit because you have to pay the higher amount under the regular rules.
