Its perplexing that in Afghanistan we've known basically what to do from the getgo while in Iraq we see a lot of ineptness.

The two countries are about the same size geographically and population wise. Both are ethnically and religiously split - Pushtun, Tajik, Uzbek, Hazara (who are Shiite). So one country shouldn't necessarily be a bigger problem than the other.

Petreaus should hustle over there and learn how to the same in Iraq.

Iraq is not Afghanistan - the two countries are very different. Afghanistan is mountainous and spread out with little concentration of people and where the fighting occurs in remote areas. Iraq population is much denser with fighters that no one can identify because they drift into and out of the population at will.

It will take two different tactics.
