When Eisenhower graduated number one from of a class of 275, in the Command and General Staff School, an instructor named George S. Patton remarked to him the day the rankings were released and said, "Major, some day, I'll be working for you".

The Air Force held back on attacking in Afghanistan until they had bases in the "Stans" to the North for plane-crash pickup service. Just too risk-adverse. They should have isolated the battlefield much sooner there. In fact, I don't think they ever really did isolate it. Al Qaeda types were able to escape to Pakistan and Iran by car all the way though the campaign.

I watched Barnett's appearance with Lamb this morning on C-SPAN. He was remarking about the two separate forces we have in Africa. The non-kinetic "community police" SysAdmin which is training and working with African troops, and the "Swat Team" of Special Forces.

He didn't push it, but one thing that is coming though clearly in all of his presentations is the inferior caliber of the people State and the Aid groups have in the field compared to our DOD people. This makes it doubly difficult because DOD can't do a thing in Africa without the Ambassador's express permission within each country. And we have some pretty anti-military Ambassadors in some of these countries. Who REALLY don't want our SF types in "their" country.

Just the opposite of the ME situation.
