DJ Redbook: US Retail Sales Down 1.0% First 3 Wks Of June Vs May

.

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--U.S. chain store sales fell 1.0% in the first three weeks of June versus the previous month, according to Redbook Research's latest indicator of national retail sales released Tuesday.

The drop in the index was deeper than the expected 0.8% decline.

The Johnson Redbook Index also showed seasonally adjusted sales in the three-week period rose 1.7% compared with June 2006, just short of the 1.9% target.

Redbook said on an unadjusted basis, sales in the week ended June 23 were up 1.4% from the same week in 2006, after a 2.0% increase the previous week.

"Sales growth was slower and below plan during the third week of June. Retailers gave various explanations for the softness. Some merchants point out that the week's softness was due to the weather...Other retailers found themselves on the wrong end of an annual comparison in mainly men's apparel with the comparable year ago week having been boosted by Father's Day," Redbook said.
