Two books that together describe and document the Afghanistan campaign in detail are Weapon of Choice and Masters of Chaos.

My favorite sources are "First in: An Insider's Account of How the Cia Spearheaded the War on Terror in Afghanistan by Gary Schroen," and the one by Gary's replacement, "Jawbreaker: the Attack on Bin Laden and Al Qaeda: a Personal Account By the CIA's Key Field Commander, by Gary Berntsen." Finally, "Not a Good Day to Die," by Sean Naylor, who is a prize winning military correspondent for the "Army Times." It is a very detailed account of "Operation Anaconda."
