chinoiserie is actually European reproductions of Chinese style. It began with attempting to copy the oriental pottery and expanded into their furniture and art style.

Most of the "oriental" pieces we have in the US are actually copies, of course, some do come from China or Japan. Your fireplace screen sounds as though it might be just such a piece.

Most copies, are not as ornate as the originals from the orient.
