"Islamic arts, films, fiction? No. Self-indulgent fantasy."

How sad that you can write off so many artists that way- apparently even though you have zero knowledge of what's out there. The sheer variety of the literary arts coming from the Islamic world would amaze you, if you were willing to give them a try, which you clearly are not. Too bad.

Should you ever want to open your eyes, you might want to start with this book. It's a fascinating examination of the currents running through Egyptian society, and it will expand your unidimensional view of the Islamic world, which (imo) desperately needs expanding. I'm not much of a fan of the more totalitarian elements in Islamic society (or my own society, for that matter)- but you seem to completely fail to realize that huge swathes of the Islamic world are actually fairly moderate, or even apolitical. Their art is certainly far too exuberant and complex to be written off as self-indulgent fantasy. I hope you were just being specious, and you don't really believe that. If you do believe it, you would change your POV if you informed yourself on the topic.
