Let's face it, the average human is a sheep. They believe without questioning, and have great difficulty thinking "outside the box". If people openly questioned what they were told this country wouldn't be in the mess it is now in, both at home and abroad. As for using big words, I learned a valuable lesson in College. People who cannot talk at the level of their audience are NOT smart, if only for that reason alone. They are of no value to their audience, no matter how "educated" they may be.
