re: No, the fatal flaw in this bill isn't "amnesty" -- it's the euphemistically termed "temporary worker program."

I agree with almost everything is the article. Where we part company is that we have had a de facto "guest worker program" for years. It's been implemented by not enforcing the laws against hiring illegals.

I think we need to roll back the number of illegals here now before we start over with sensible legal immigration. You announce a specific date when all employers must certify that all their employees are legal; maybe six months out. After that date you will strictly enforce employment law wrt to illegals with maximum penalties for the employers. On the sane date start to allow a larger number of legal immigrants, but only for those crossing the border into the country with legitimate immigration papers. No applications accepted here.

The carrot (the chance to be legal) and the stick (being stuck in the country without a job) should lead to most of the illegals returning to their home country. Then we could move forward in a sane, controlled manner.

There's no question that we need immigration reform in this country. We need to find a way to bring the millions of immigrants laboring in the shadows into the light, and into our American family. And to the extent that we have bona fide labor shortages in this country, we need to address them through an expansion of legal immigration. But the price of immigration reform cannot be a temporary worker program that exploits foreign workers, limits real immigration, and guts wages for American workers.

I have such a hard time buying into the liberal view on illegal immigration. To tart up that POV by saying we need "to invite [them]into the light and into our American family" is such a crock. Its clear that not many have any real experience with illegal immigrants and the problems their presence in this country causes. There is a real cost to this illegal invasion that we have yet to pay in full.
