Oregon State won the College World Series Sunday night. It's a strange story:

1. The team finished 10-14 in The Pac 10. That the Beavers were invited to The World Series is unbelievable. That they won is amazing. True, their overall schedule was very tough and The Pac 10 is easily the strongest baseball conference in the country. But when you lose 5 times to Washington and Washington State, you just don't look like champions. It is no insult to lose to UCLA, Arizona State, USC, Stanford, Arizona or Cal, all except one of which also made the World Series. And they had a strong winning record non-conference against top competition. Still, I wouldn't have invited them to the Series with a losing conference record.

2. They were the defending champions, but lost most of their starting team to either graduation or pro baseball.

3. The CWS final is a two loss elimination tournament. OSU went undefeated and was easily the best team in the finals. I believe they were also undefeated in the regionals and super regionals.

4. They were considered all pitching and no hitting. Yet, they blew out the competition with their offense.

5. They live in a part of the country that is not great baseball territory. In fact, the U. of Oregon does not compete in The Pac 10 in baseball. They have a club team that practices on the lacrosse field and is not allowed into Hayward Field for weight training or any of the other facilities. But, down the road, OSU is two-peat champions.

So, congrats OSU. I've always liked beavers. <G>
