I would never place such a bet. If you want to place a bet on how people react to fearmongering you'll have to find another sucker. I deal in facts and find feelings to have little place in scientific discourse.

Which is exactly the point. We read about all of these dire predictions, and then discover that those who are most fervently promoting them don't actually believe them.
