Human beings aren't the property of either their parents or the government.

Of course before their adults decisions do have to be made for them. Generally I'd tend to defer to the parents on the decisions more than I would say they should be made by the government. But direct infliction of death or great harm would not be something that I would say would properly be ok for the parents to inflict if they decide to do so.

I support the idea of laws against child abuse. I recognize that such laws could go to far, or perhaps more likely be applied over zealously or mistakenly, but that doesn't invalidate the concept, it just means in the real world you don't get perfection.
