Sure, sail would work great now, many of the limitations of the old days easily overcome ... much less weight aloft, with modern materials, and all mechanised so nobody has to be up there working with one hand and hanging on with the other ... there have been experiments with it [a Popular Mechanics type article from a few years ago sticks in the mind] ... for bulk cargo in no particular hurry it seems logical to use sail for at least an assist ... or for cruises, hey everybody loves a ride on a sailboat, and for the impatient you could have an exercise deck, with ergonomically designed banks of oars
