Doesn't explain why people are working longer hours,

Probably not true.
minneapolisfed.org

Well ok according to the fed, we work about an hour and a half more on average than in 1980, but about 7 hours less than in 1950.

Longer term, hours worked have clearly decreased

which addresses both this issue, and the next point. Its a good response in terms of longer term trends even if it isn't up to date (it was written in 1995)

and it takes two workers to support a family these days.

To the extent that it really does, its largely because people's expectations are higher these days. You don't have one car families, you might have 5 car families, and the cars are more complex and powerful. On the average people go further in terms of higher education. You have larger houses, better health care, all sorts of electronics and computer equipment and services, and more long distance vacations, and all sorts of other material improvements over the lifestyles of previous generations.
