No, a whole lot of families can't pay for rent and food on one salary.

1 - That isn't something new.

2 - That is at least partially covered by "because people's expectations are higher these days." The higher expectations include larger and better living spaces that cost more, and includes more eating out, and more eating prepared meals, rather than buying bulk foods and preparing and cooking them at home. Also money spent on other parts of the higher expectations is unavailable for spending on food or rent.
