Thank you. I appreciate the explanation.

I understand it's a mathematical construct. My worry is that it might be wrong. You know how it is in the sciences. People come up with theories, they think they are right, they go one for years believing they are right, then they turn out to be wrong. Frequently the people most entrenched in the profession fail to see the problem. I'm sure you've seen the debate over global warming. Lots of evidence, lots of formulas, but still people disagree- and someone is probably wrong.

I'm not saying that's the way it is with forestry, but I'm suspicious of the policies pressed by the lumber companies. So much of our US system is in the thrall of corporations, that it makes me worried about the system, since I know big lumber has a lot of power. Most of our administrative agencies are captives of special interest groups. I'm sure you can understand why we might be worried about that here. That doesn't mean we don't want lumber to make a profit, but I certainly worry about how our resources are being managed.

If you don't fully understand it, how can you be sure it is right? I don't mean any disrespect by that, but I have seen so many theories come and go, some of them very widely accepted. How do we know this is not one of the mistakes?

I hope it isn't. I hope the national lands are being well managed. But I really can't tell. And as with global warming, there seem to be a lot of really intelligent knowledgable people on both sides, saying very different things.
