Government subsidies have their place, but for the most part I'm against them. A bus-riding pal of mine in Juneau who had a PhD in economics said that the reason the airline industry was in so much trouble is that government subsidies encouraged them to build over capacity.

I haven't noticed the traffic dying down since gas went over $3, so obviously it's still cheap. When it gets expensive, we'll see a difference in the traffic levels.
