I think some couch time is the only way to fix that. One thing you might want to look into though would be hypnosis.

I was also going to say hypnosis..Oral beat me to it.

I once was hypnotised into having natural childbirth. The guy that trained me ( the hypnotist ) told me this story about someone he had recently worked with. By the way, it worked so well I almost had the baby at home.

This guy had a phobia to buttons.............his kids learned that hey could control him by showing him their buttons and it was becoming a huge problem.

Under hypnosis he remembered something that had happened to him while he was living in China prior to WW II as a young boy. He and his parents were fleeing the Japanese Army that was invading. They were hiding up on top of a hill. As daylight broke they saw the Japanese and the sun hit them..........making the buttons shine that were on the uniforms of the Japanese....thus the phobia of buttons cause he associated the buttons with all that fear he was feeling from the sight of the invaders.

I'm a hundred miles away from being a doctor, but if I were in your place I would try valium. It was very helpful in getting me over my flying problem.

If the side effects trouble you, your doctor has several other options available.

In any case the first step is to see a shrink, sorry but there is no cure without that first step.

My hypnotist was also a Psychologist with a PhD...he had trained under one of the best hypnotists in north America...............the guy was terrific.

No crazy stuff..............I just got very relaxed as he spoke to me after creating a nice relaxing image mentally. You create a "safe room", so as you deal with the phobia and confront different parts of it you can retreat back to the mental "safe room".

It's actually a technique that I have re-employed many additional times in my life for various other scary or traumatic things that have happened to me.
