Willful, protective, intense, powerful - yep that was him. :) And there is a lot of physical resemblance. He was very hard to deal with when I first got him, he was on thin ice for awhile, a real tough customer. He was always wanting to fight my other male dogs. I had to break up 4-5 fights - talk about a physical challenge! I'd never had a dog like that, it was a different level of consciousness, to say the least. I picked him up on the crosstown expressway in Tulsa, the guy driving in front of me had hit him. No broken bones, just collapsed lungs and some nerve damage, which he recovered from. He must have been in an awful place. He had a foot long lead on his collar that he had chewed through - it was that steel cable. He probably spent a few days on that and no one noticed. I'd take him for walks and the most routine sounds, like birds in trees, a car going by, would overwhelm his senses. And you could tell that being petted was a brand new thing for him, he didn't know what to make of it. It was as if he had spent his life in some dark place with no human contact. As hardcore as he was when I first got him, over time he transformed into a lovable teddy bear, sometimes he was real comical. But he had that v-chip in his brain about fighting, so I had to keep him separate from other males. I have a barn in back of my house with a fence enclosing the inner area, so I kept Buddy in the barn along with Maxie, another dog I adopted. Not as rustic as it sounds, the 2nd floor has heat and air conditioning - they lived in style. So my barn dogs and house dogs would share the yard on a rotating basis, with two doors of separation at all times. Now that Buddy is gone, Maxie is mixing in well. You can tell she misses him, those two were like Frik and Frak. I read awhile back that Spanish Bulldogs were brought in from Spain by ranchers in the West to be working dogs. Makes sense the bloodline would still be around, although I don't think there are any purebreds left.
