Einstein's work on the special and general theories was based on the work of predecessors and contemporaries, Maxwell, Michelson-Morley, Minkowski, Poincare, Mach, Dirac, Lorentz, Friedmann, Hilbert, Bose, Bohr, Schrodinger, Szilard, Posner, Podolsky, Freundlich, Grossman, Noether, and Olinto De Pretto, who first published the equation e=Mc^2.

The field equations of relativity are in fact Hilbert's field equations with some additions.

His work on light led him to propose the stimulated emission of radiation, which we now know as light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. Or Laser.

"In 1917, Einstein published an article in Physikalische Zeitschrift that proposed the possibility of stimulated emission, the physical technique that makes possible the laser (Einstein 1917b). "

The irony there is that he should have gotten the nobel prize for his theory of relativity, but they didn't believe him-lol.

"Except for the photoelectric effect for which he won the Nobel Prize in Physics. His theories of relativity were subsequently experimentally confirmed.

And Einstein admitted that he did not work from data to understanding the universe, he said he saw it one day and worked backwards."
