My liberal ideas are that everybody should have human rights: rights to life, liberty and property. If people live in free societies that respect those rights, good. If they live in some benighted area where most of the population are slaves, that place should be reformed.

All liberals used to believe this. But today's liberals believe in multiculturalism, which says that there isn't one standard for human rights, it's all relative. So you can only work on reforming "your" culture, the other benighted places aren't benighted at all, just following their own equally valid cultural traditions. You can't judge'em.

This is the basic idea that is always slamming any "Western" power for any infringement of human rights, while giving a free pass to any group that can claim to be "Other". So Al Qaeda hacks off heads, forbids women's education, and declares everyone must live by 7th century Sharia? It's their culture, can't judge their traditions.
