Well, I haven't made my point particularly well. I agree with the general notion that in political theory, liberals are often viewed as the party of change and reform. And that conservatives are generally viewed as the party that slows change down.

But in a context in which the group which calls itself conservative wants to return to a deep, deep past--an economic theory from the 19th century and a social alignment from the 50s or earlier--and the party most regularly identified as liberal works hard to keep them from dragging things backward, aren't the labels somewhat suspect?

I use them but can't figure out how to defend them as anything much more than handy conversational shorthand tools.
