If Bush had kept spending in check and stayed out of Iraq while being tough on actual terrorists, I have little doubt he could have squeezed the Dems out to the coasts for the next generation. But Rove and Cheney never counted on how the snide partisan rancor that won the 50.x% elections plus the misconduct in power would steadily shrink that 50% back down to a 25-30% base. Where we go next is really open to question. I don't see extremes of the left or right doing well for long if at all. Beyond that I am not sure if the leaders will define the next era or the electorate will force them to find new alignments to win and stay in power.
