I take his just released memo like bush wanted to change social security.. great idea but words and no chance of action by our congress. We are in a mode of withdrawing from international military action and isolation.

John,
At least part of Congress has jumped on board. Last week, the House Armed Services Committee (HASC) directed the Army and SOCOM to make unconventional warfare priority #1 and make the current top priority - Direct Action - a lower priority.

Regardless of the adjective used to describe it, unconventional, irregular, asymmetric, or insurgent warfare needs a different set of strategies and tactics than those possessed by our West Point cabal of conventionally trained combat officers. We have spent 55 years training and equipping that other force. It is time to put them to work properly. We cannot afford to do another Iraq like this Iraq, nor can we afford to lose any more small wars. Our enemies are emboldened enough. We must shut them down and we need lots of help to do that.

SF is uniquely trained and capable of using indigenous populations within a designated area of operations as a force multiplier. Our conventional forces have never seen the wisdom in that and they don't know how to do it, if they did see the wisdom. That is why the entire Iraqi army was disbanded to begin with.

HASC shifted priorities. That alone is huge. Now we see a candidate for the executive getting aboard with HASC's new priorities. I believe the others will follow because they have to. Romney is the first to state a new battle plan. The others cannot simply hang around and gripe. Not supporting the current plan is one thing and it will get attention for a while, but sooner or later all of the candidates must answer the question - What would you do that is different?
