I don't think the media is as cooperative as it was in the good old days. Sure, it'll print a lie it's told one, under the auspices of quoting someone is "news". But the media won't [generally] keep the truth under wraps for any significant length of time. It won't report that every battle is a successful adventure.

P.S. It does seem to be true that the bigger the lie, the more believed it is. I still don't understand that, but it does seem to be true.

P.P.S. There's also the lazy lie. "The US is the best in the world in _________." We don't even have to know what any other country in the world is doing, we're just the best.
