Rentech Inc., which transforms energy resources into alternative fuels, said Monday it hired plant engineering firm Chicago Bridge & Iron Co. to convert a natural-gas plant to one that makes synthetic fuels.

The companies did not disclose financial terms.

The Rentech Energy Midwest plant will convert feedstock from natural gas to coal using gasification technology that CB&I installs, according to Rentech. The conversion is expected to be complete in 2010 and result in the first U.S. plant to make clean synthetic fuels and fertilizer.

Rentech shares added 2 cents to $2.61 in midday trading. CB&I shares rose $1.21, or 3.2 percent, to $38.95. The stock has ranged from $22.75 to $40.19 in the past year.
