A winning combination would be a broadhead that offered high TCV and a design that just penetrated enough to guarantee a pass-through. Even if the arrow stayed in the deer after exiting or just flopped onto the ground after passing-through we would have a perfectly engineered broadhead designed to kill cleanly. A head like this would use all of its energy to cut the maximum amount of tissue to cause fatal hemorrhaging and not be concerned with sticking into the ground on the far side. It's a balancing act of engineering.

The makers of bullets had this figured out a long time ago. If you shoot an animal with a full metal jacket solid, the bullet passes clean through and does little damage. The entrance and exit hole are about the same size. But if you design a bullet to mushroom and transfer its all of its energy into the animal, and not exit, you get what is known as knock-down power. All of the kinetic energy is used to do tissue damage. Maximum tissue damage is the name of the game. Use all of the kinetic energy to damage tissue...or in the case of a broadhead, to cut tissue.
